You’ve no doubt noticed that we are in the middle of an intense, important and uncertain series of talks the U.S. hopes will improve the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).  As a 23 year old agreement, updating the accord makes sense.  Discarding what works does not.

The truth is the U.S. auto industry is in the midst of one of the most remarkable economic comebacks in history. Right now, thirteen U.S. auto manufacturers, hundreds of parts suppliers, thousands of dealers and uncounted other businesses are thriving. American workers and businesses are winning with NAFTA.

At the unveiling of the updated federal guidance for automated driving systems, guests (myself included) could walk through a tech pavilion where the products of brilliant computer, electrical and mechanical engineering were on display.   Elsewhere on that Michigan campus, hardware and systems undergo constant testing and refinement in vehicles under simulated real-world conditions.   And that’s an apt metaphor for the challenge we face in realizing the benefits of automated vehicles.

Each year, a collection of auto executives, auto journalists, regulators, elected officials, stakeholders, researchers, and the usual suspects (a term I use affectionately) heads north to Traverse City, Michigan to mull the state of the industry. 

This year, I participated on a panel called, “Fuel Economy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Where does Policy go now? And, will the Market Follow?”. Believe it or not, peace may have broken out.

Since we met for this discussion last August much has changed -- a Federal review of new standards for 2022-2025 was closed and then reopened, a California review of its standards was completed and the process begun for new regulations out to 2030, all while industry sales appear to be coming off their record pace. And, let’s not forget there was also an election.
